CHAPTER EIGHT

DANI rubbed her fingers over the headache pounding away at her temples. It had been nagging at her for over an hour. I give up. She admitted the tension of Bullop’s latest shenanigan’s had her on edge…if not already over it.

She glanced at the ancient clock ticking away the seconds. Lunchtime had passed over an hour ago, but she hadn’t bothered to grab more than the banana she’d tossed into her purse. Hunger gnawed at her belly.

My own body is attacking me. Enough was enough, it was time to listen to the signals and get away from the office. Cami would know how to relieve her stress. She dialed the diner.

“Yeah?” Cami’s sullen voice didn’t bode well for cheer-up potential.

“Hey, sis, you sound like I feel.”

“So?”

This was worse than she’d thought. Her sister was usually sickeningly upbeat.

“Cuff eating away at your brain?” She twirled the cord around her finger.

The silence stretched until she wondered if Cami would answer.

“Yeah, I guess he is. You don’t sound any better.”

“I don’t feel any better. Want to play hooky and run to Independence City for some hot tea and mutual whining?”

“How soon can you pick me up?”

Dani slammed a desk drawer shut. “I’m there.”

Five minutes later, the trees rushed passed the car window as they escaped. Cami’s hair hadn’t improved since breakfast and neither had her mood.

“I mean what did he think he was doing kissing me like a starving man?” Cami glared through the windshield.

Dani nodded. “I know. Who do they think they are?”

The heat of her twins’ stare finally forced her to glance sideways. “What?”

“Distract me—tell me how it is that you understand how I’m feeling about Cuff.”

“I…well…that is—”

“Cut to the main course or I’ll set you up with the belching trucker who came into the diner this morning.”

“Heaven forbid.” She focused on the numbing dashed line in the center of the road. “Hunter kissed me.”

“Yeah, I know. What’s the problem?”

“I kissed him back, no, I all but attacked the man.” A sigh slipped between her lips.

“Good.” Cami grinned. “I’ve noticed him staring at you, especially this morning. At first I thought it was because your shirt was backward, but the light in his eyes was definitely lust.”

“Oh.”

“Why was your shirt on the wrong way?”

“In a hurry, I guess.” No way was Dani explaining the real reason. I allowed a near stranger to seduce me in the chicken coop. It sounded outrageous in her head—out loud it would be insane. “Tell me about Cuff.”

The distraction worked.

“We had a great time, excluding your toilet incident, that is.” She laughed and slapped her thigh. “Who am I trying to kid? Getting trapped in an out-house was one of the better blunders you’ve pulled.”

“Gee, then it was worthwhile. Finish with Cuff.” Dani braked for a stop sign.

“When the idiot took me home, I stuck my hand out for a friendly good-night handshake and the snake moved in.”

Dani’s brows shot up. “He forced his attentions on you?”

“Not exactly, he held my hand and pulled me closer…”

“And…”

“And he made my knees go weak, I thought I’d melt.
